The St Andrew's and Sherington Church of England Schools' Partnership

  Christmas 2010

  • Our three school Partnership was given the considerable boost when the Governors of St Andrew's and Sherington Schools took the next bold step and voted unanimously for full Federation under one Governing Body and Headteacher Ms Anne Shedden. The consultation of all stake-holding parties returned a similar endorsement.

  • The snow brought the delight to our youngsters' faces; the school remained warm, open and safe due to the diligence of Barry Tofts our Caretaker. While we had to cancel a trip to Campbell Park for a Crafty Christmas activity with the Parks' Trust thanks are due to our own crafty dinner lady Sue Temple who showed her creative mettle by organizing a replacement afternoon of seasonal activities.

  • Many thanks are due also to Jo and Jane-Anne from the PTFA for a warming jacket potato and apple crumble lunch on our penultimate day.

  • Our Christmas Nativity performances, while competent when rehearsing in school, were given the magical and atmospheric final touches in St Laud's Church to a very appreciative village audience. Similarly, the final day's party was a joyful celebration to end the term and prepare for Christmas where it perhaps counts most for our fortunate young charges, at home with family.
  • We look forward to the New Year with confidence that some uncertainties in the past are resolved and we will weather the inevitable changes coming our way with renewed Professional enthusiasm and Governance as well as rather plush new accommodation for the administration of the school. CS

  20 November 2010

  • All three schools have completed our collaboration around the Take one picture project with very successful workshops. The last of these looking at the timely concept of Angels.

  • Reception and Year 1 children celebrated Diwali in their respective projects with the younger children making the whole school some very tasty sweets while the older cohort reflected upon the battle between good and evil that the story of Rama and Sita reminds us of. Our Key Stage 1 children also confront the need to be steadfast in the face of circumstances as they study the life and works of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.

  • Additionally our three school Partnership has successfully interviewed for the post of collaborative artist. Mr Yaw Asiamah was offered, and has accepted, the position to work with us during the Spring term on our second Creative Partnership Arts Award. Staff and children worked with three artists on the day and Yaw was a very popular choice to collaborate on this new multicultural project to promote understanding and Community Cohesion.

  • Our new buildings take ever more defined shape with the staff thinking about furniture acquisition and the children gathering information and artifacts to include in a 'time-capsule' package. If you are a past pupil, parent, teacher or governor or 'friend' of the school please don't hesitate to drop us a line by snail or e-mail or donate a photo or memento that links you to Sherington CE School, (see and compare George's drawing of Year 2 with their photo in Oxford Cathedral last month!).
  • Open forums have been held at Sherington and St Andrew's school to pursue our move to Federation.

  • As we prepare for Christmas in school please note that our performances of the Nativity story, Shine star shine! will take place in St Laud's on Wednesday 15th December (2pm) and Thursday 16th December (6pm). You are all most welcome to celebrate this with us.

  • The end of the calendar year reminds us, staff, pupils and governors of the school, to thank all those who have supported and encouraged our efforts this year which has seen a successful Ofsted inspection and a move to more sustained and consistent leadership.

  • Have a very Happy Christmas and please accept all our best wishes for the New Year. CS

  22 October 2010

  • A high point for the school was the invitation to our Year 2 pupils to sing in Oxford Cathedral for the Diocesan Service to Headteachers and Governors of Church of England schools. They acquitted themselves very well and then returned to perform in our Harvest Festival Celebration in St Laud's Church.

  • Our Partnership activities continue with a workshop around the theme of Castles with children from our three schools reacquainting and sharing cross-curricula activities at Sherington.

  • We said goodbye to Asha who has moved to Scotland with her family and taken a book prayers and our best wishes for her future.

  • Our Reception children, now in school full-time, have been working and playing hard. Their autumn topic of Leaves with Mrs Ravilious has given them much to investigate and explore with enthusiasm, both in and out of the classroom.

  • The whole school worked on our favourite soft toys during Teddy Bear Week which was kicked-off by a visit from School Librarian Paul Dorney with a lovely collection of books across the reading ranges.

  • The Governors of Sherington CE School and St Andrew's CE School are looking at a more formal Federation of the two schools and a consultation with interested parties will begin soon.

  22 September 2010

  • The new school year started with enthusiasm and commitment in all year groups. Our new Reception cohort have enjoyed their morning Induction sessions so much they were reluctant to go home after lunch. Their early activities around Harvest and exploring fruit with all their senses led to a delicious mixed fruit salad that was enjoyed by all.

  • The older year groups of Key Stage One settled to their work with only a few backward glances to the holidays and have been reminding themselves and deepening their knowledge of what it is to have healthy lifestyles. The introduction of Yoga exercises into our PE sessions has given this a new dimension. We resumed our twofold three-school collaboration by returning to the Take one Picture Project illustrating the Apocryphal story of Tobias and the Angel. This term the extended focus began at Sherington with the theme of 'Castles; Real and imaginary'.

  • This collaboration will continue apace throughout the year and encompass considerable investment from an Arts Council Creative Partnership Award to the three schools (our second at Sherington) for extended creative curriculum development.

  • Governor commitment and investment in school life is often behind-the-scenes and not apparent. However at the moment it is being given, quite literally, concrete expression as our building works progress well. The new and extended facilities will give a fresh outlook to the school showing our optimism and faith in the future of Sherington CE School. The new front extension and internal works will give us extended learning spaces and new facilities for staff, visitors and the disabled. Continuity with the school's history is maintained by the re-siting of the old school bell in a purpose-built tower which is a key feature of the new frontage.

  • Rehearsals are underway for our Harvest Festival Celebration in St Laud's Church at 6pm Friday 8th October to be followed by the congregational harvest supper.
The school will host an Open Day on Tuesday 19th October from 9.30-11.30am and 1.30-2.30pm when you can see us at work and play. However early in the year this might seem, if you are looking for a school place for your child in September 2011 then we would welcome you warmly and try to answer any initial questions you may have.
