The St Andrew's and Sherington Church of England Schools' Partnership

  Assessment

  • At Sherington each child is treated as an individual and close attention is paid to their progress.

  • We plan our lessons with clear learning objectives. We take these objectives from the National Curriculum, National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies. Our lesson plans contain information about the tasks to be set, resources needed and the way we assess the children's work. We use continuous teacher assessment to support children's strengths and improve on their weaknesses. We evaluate all lessons so that we can modify and improve our teaching in the future.

  • In the Foundation Stage, continuous teacher assessment is used to complete each child's Individual Foundation Stage Profile. The Foundation Stage Profile is reported to parents at the end of their child's first year in school.

  • All pupils are statutorily assessed in their final year of Key Stage 1. This means that all children in Year 2 will complete their SAT's (Standard Assessment Tests) usually during the early part of the Summer Term. They are assessed in English (reading, writing and spelling), Mathematics and Science and speaking and listening. Following their assessment the children receive a 'level' in each of the above areas;
    • Level 1 is below average
    • Level 2 is an average score for a typical 7-year old
    • Level 3 is significantly above the average expectations

  • Children with learning difficulties are unlikely to achieve the average score of Level Two, because, in this respect, they are not a typical 7-year old. However, in their own terms they will have made progress appropriate to their abilities.

  • Please try not to take your child out of school during term time in Year 2 as it can affect their performance and be unsettling for them.

  • These assessments are reported to parents at the Summer Term Parental Consultations.

  • Sherington School is committed to ensuring that all children achieve to the best of their ability.
